Chapter and Verse by Timothy Poulton
Chapter and Verse by Timothy Poulton
It feel like I’ve been an artist my entire life. For much of my childhood, I was playing musical instruments, writing tunes and mixing records pursuing my art, and whatever it took to make ends meet. Eventually I was able to become a full-time artist and fulfilling my dream of focusing all of my time on creating art either as a graphic design or photographer. The journey wasn’t easy. The challenges that face any photographer are many. It often takes years of education and practice to hone one’s craft. It can be difficult to find work in the photography field, and, as a consequence, many photographers are forced to find other work for income. Often friends and family members discourage the full-time pursuit of photography. Even photographers who are able to focus on creating work, often find it difficult to market and sell the work. The photography market is extremely competitive. Photographers vie for display space and customers. The challenges of producing photography and presenting it in a marketable way can be prohibitive. In todays photography world, we seem to be obsessed with hardship, that image required a pack-raft or the photographer waded in freezing water to capture that scene and how may times have you read someone describing with hours of hiking, even I’ve written it myself. Does it really make the image anymore relevant than the dude setting up from the boot of his or her car. Every artist faces a unique set of challenges. I’ve been fortunate enough, as an artist and the owner of my own photography business, to see photographers who have found ways to overcome all of these challenges to pursue their passion and make a successful living while doing it, but I’m very aware that the challenges you face are daunting and very real. What is your current big challenge? What do you feel is currently your single greatest challenge? Share your challenge in the comments below, and take a moment to read over other photographers challenges, I think you’ll find that you are not alone. Thanks for sharing!

This Golden Life by Dylan Toh & Marianne Lim
This Golden Life by Dylan Toh & Marianne Lim
Currumbin Beach Gold Coast The title refers to the light and the location with the skyscrapers of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach in the background 15km away. On another note, the 'golden' life may also refer to my upbringing and the opportunities I have had. I am forever thankful for my parents who made the decision to move to Australia back in 1983 and all of the decisions regarding our schooling and sacrifices they made. I find myself now in a job that I love, with family that I cherish and the opportunity to be able to partake in photography without financial hardship. I find it a little odd that at times you get the feeling that this type of 'golden' life is frowned upon in favour of going through difficult life circumstances and finding photography as a saving grace. Or perhaps even eschewing the comforts of a regular day job (which is often interpreted as some sort of cop out) in favour of living day to day with uncertainty. There are merits to both and speaking from the point of view of one who has made choices that revolve around stability, I can wholeheartedly recommend the kind of path I have taken if that's something you strive for. Whatever path you choose, stay true but open to the fact that some people are born into good life circumstances. The fact that they are does not count as a character flaw against them (though I realise many flaws are common to this demographic!) Random thought over ! What are some of yours?

NYC Sunset Rainbow by Edward Reese
NYC Sunset Rainbow by Edward Reese
A late afternoon thunderstorm over the city ended up producing an amazing backdrop for the Manhattan skyline. As the storm passed by, the setting sun lit up the buildings and created a really fantastic glow against the dark clouds and rain. A few degrees of rainbow arc capped off the stunning scene. This is a three-image panorama with some exposure blending. Also, the reflection was added in post.
